Elections are conducted according to the rules and regulations set out in the Local Government Act, which governs local government elections throughout B.C.

Local government elections in British Columbia are held every four years. The next election will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018 with advance voting opportunities on October 10th and 16th. The ACRD also conducts the Trustee Elections on behalf of School District 70.

The Province of British Columbia has uploaded a collection of information for potential candidates.

The Province has also partnered with the Local Government Leadership Academy, Local Government Management Association and the Union of BC Municipalities to produce some videos to help answer questions about local government and serving as an elected official.

There are two categories of voters who qualify to vote in local government elections in B.C., Resident Electors and Non-Resident Electors.

A Resident Elector qualifies to vote by meeting the following criteria:

  • You are a Canadian citizen;
  • You are 18 years of age or older on or before general voting day;
  • You have been a resident of BC for at least six (6) months prior to general voting day;
  • You have lived in the Area for at least thirty (30) days prior to general voting day; and
  • You are not disqualified by any enactment from voting in an election or otherwise disqualified by law.

A Non-Resident Elector qualifies to vote by meeting the following criteria:

  • You are not a Resident Elector of the Electoral Area;
  • You are a Canadian Citizen;
  • You are at least 18 years of age or older on or before general voting day;
  • You have lived in BC for at least six (6) months prior to general voting day;
  • You have owned property in the Area for at least thirty (30) days prior to general voting day;
  • You have been designated by the other owner(s) of the property as a Non-Resident (Property) Elector for that property; A majority of owners must complete and sign a Non Resident Property Elector Form;
  • You are not disqualified by any enactment from voting in an election or otherwise disqualified by law.

Property registered in company/corporation name does not qualify under the Local Government Act to vote in this local government election.

Voting
You will be voting for the offices of:

Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District - Six (6) Electoral Area Directors, one (1) representative for each of the following Electoral Areas:

    "A" (Bamfield), "B" (Beaufort), "C" (Long Beach), "D" (Sproat Lake), "E" (Beaver Creek) and "F" (Cherry Creek)

School District No. 70 (Alberni) Seven (7) Trustees

    One (1) Trustee to be elected representing Trustee Election Area #1: District of Tofino, District of Ucluelet and Electoral Area "C" (Long Beach).

    Six (6) Trustees to be elected representing Trustee Election Area #2: City of Port Alberni, and Electoral Areas: "A" (Bamfield), "B" (Beaufort), "D" (Sproat Lake), "E" (Beaver Creek) and "F" (Cherry Creek) .

Declaration of Election by Voting will be made on September 24, 2018 at 4:00 pm.

Registration
There is no need to pre-register to vote, as the registration of all elections for this election will take place at the time of voting. The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District conducts its election and other voting using Voting Day Only Registration and therefore does not maintain a voters list.

Identification
All electors are required to bring two (2) pieces of identification to the voting place. The identification must show the electors place of residence and at least one of the pieces of identification must show the electors signature.

Acceptable identification includes:

  • BC Drivers License
  • Social Insurance Card
  • BC Identification Card
  • Credit Card
  • BC Care Card or Gold Care Card
  • Property Tax Notice
  • ICBC Vehicle Insurance Registration Documents
  • Utility Bill
  • Citizenship Card
  • Note: A combined BC Drivers License and BC Care Card are considered 1 piece of ID

Voting by Mail
a. As authorized under Section 110 of the Local Government Act, voting may be done by mail for those electors who meet the criteria in paragraph (b).

b. The following electors are permitted to vote by mail ballot:

    i. Those persons who have a physical disability, illness or injury that affects their ability to vote at another voting opportunity;

    ii. Persons who expect to be absent from the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District on general voting day and at the times of all advance voting opportunities;

    iii. Persons who reside in the following areas:

      1. Electoral Areas: "A' (Bamfield), "B" (Beaufort), "C' (Long Beach), "D" (Sproat Lake), "E" (Beaver Creek), "F" (Cherry Creek)
      2. Maa-nulth First Nations: Toquaht, Huu-ay-aht, Uchucklesaht, Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ

      that are remote from the voting places at which they are entitled to vote where their only access to their residence is by boat or aircraft, or their travel time by road from their residence to the nearest voting place at which the person is entitled to vote is greater than thirty (30) minutes.

Electors who are eligible to vote by mail and wish to vote, must apply in writing to the Chief Election Officer before 12 noon on Friday, October 19, 2018.
