Sort'nGo: Green Haul Pilot project

The ACRD is launching a Sort’nGo: Green Haul Pilot! Project to help reduce landfill waste and support composting efforts in the Region. It offers residents who do not have access to traditional organics roadside collection, a convenient way to drop off food waste.

Compostable organic material makes up 30-40% of the local waste stream. The pilot project is intended to divert even more of that material away from the Sort’nGo Centre, helping to reduce pressure on waste infrastructure and further support local diversion and sustainability goals.

The project is a voluntary six-month pilot program that enables residents to self-haul their organics. Once registered, residents will receive a five-gallon Sort’nGrow bucket (made from recycled ocean plastics), a punch pass for 15 organic drop-offs, and 0.5 yards of compost from Earth, Land & Sea when the punch card is full. The cost to participate is $25.

The pilot project is designed to be inclusive, offering access to residents in multi-family units and First Nation communities as well as Electoral Areas in the Alberni Valley. This is who will have access to the project:

• Sproat Lake
• Bamfield
• Tseshaht First Nation
• Hupacasath First Nation
• Huu-ay-aht First Nations
• Uchucklesaht Tribe
• City of Port Alberni (multi-family)

This project offers an accessible and affordable way for individuals to participate in composting and reduce landfill waste.
