News Release July 25 - Funding for AVRA Lighting
The Alberni Clayoquot Regional District has adopted a plan for three capital improvements to the Alberni Valley Regional Airport:
1. Runway expansion to increase the size to 100' X 5,000' (estimated cost $5.9 million);2. Installation of a medium intensity lighting system (estimated cost $1.47 million);
3. Establishing an Obstacle Limitation Surface acceptable for the design of a public GPS approach for either the existing or proposed runway configuration (estimated cost $350,000). The regional district has completed the detailed design ready for tendering, as well as Class A cost estimates, a Business Plan and applications for funding to three different grant opportunities. In order to secure the regional districts share of the funds for the expansion an Alternate Approval Process is underway. This provides the opportunity for opponents to sign a petition against the proposal. If 10% of the electorate of the Alberni Valley sign a petition the matter will be subject to a referendum. The OLS work has commenced and construction of the runway will be possible first thing in 2016 subject to financial approvals. For more information please contact:
