| COMMON RECYCLING QUESTIONS Where do I put the recycling boxes? Place your boxes alongside your garbage can. What if I need more boxes? Yellow recycling stickers can be obtained from the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District office at 3008 Fifth Avenue. These stickers can be affixed to additional boxes (i.e., Rubbermaid tote, 80 litre garbage can) to identify it as a recycling box. The additional containers must not exceed 44lbs. Additional Blue Boxes can be purchased at many hardware stores. What materials can I recycle? Cardboard (non-waxed), Boxboard, Mixed Paper, Newspaper, Plastics (Numbers 1 through 7 and plastic bags), metals (tin and foils). ALL materials must be clean and free of food residual. Plastic bags should be all placed together in one bag and tied off. Pizza Boxes? Can they be recycled? The bottom portion of the pizza box will be soiled and cannot be recycled. If the top portion is clean and free of oil and food debris, it may be placed in the blue box. Is there anything we cannot recycle? Glass and Styrofoam are not included in the program. Food soiled items, batteries, yard waste. These items can be brought to locations that will recycle them. Please see the Recycling Directory for locations to deposit these items. Why is glass not accepted? Glass causes safety hazards to the staff collecting and sorting recyclable material. Glass can also contaminate other materials. There are no viable markets for glass collected through the recycling program. Deposit or refundable glass containers such as juice, wine, beer and liquor bottles can be returned to the bottle depot for a refund. Is there anything in particular I should do with my plastic bags? All plastic grocery bags and plastic film should be cleaned and placed inside a grocery bag and tied off. Make sure the receipt has been removed from the bag. Is there a limit on how many recyclable materials I am able to put out? There is no limit but containers must be 80L or less and weigh less than 44 pounds each. My recycling was not picked up? Check to see if it is your Recycling Pick-up week. If it is, please call Sun Coast Waste at (250) 720-2161 (City of Port Alberni & Beaver Creek), or Sonbird Refuse & Recycling at (250) 720-4406 (West Coast). What happens to the materials I put in my blue box? Your materials are transported to Vancouver Island Recycling in Nanaimo where they are sorted and sent to processing plants to be made into other products. Corrugated cardboard reappears as cereal boxes. Mixed paper is made into new boxboard products. Plastic can be recycled into shampoo bottles or plastic lumber. |
