Who regulates the control of animals?

The Regional District can regulate the control of animals but does not. The following applies in the District: If you wish to keep animals off your property you MUST build a fence to keep them out.

Who has jurisdiction over drainage problems?

In many instances, drainage problems crop up due to change in run-off patterns resulting from new roads, ditching, land clearing and the like. Your first inquiry should be at the Ministry of Transportation and Highways, if you think their drainage system is causing the problem. The Water Management of the Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection may also be able to assist you.

Where can I get maps of the area?

Zoning, subdivision, legal and house number maps are available at the Regional District. A check with the planning department will tell you the prices, scales and dates of compilation, etc.

Topographic maps which show elevation, landforms and some trails and roads are available at book stores or sporting goods stores.

Most of the local book stores carry trail guides for those wanting strictly hiking and camping maps.

What permits do I need to set up a business?

In the Regional District, no business licence is required, but you must have the correct zoning to allow you to operate your proposed business. Check with the Regional District about zoning regulations.

Within the municipalities of Tofino, Ucluelet and Port Alberni you require a business licence. Check with the appropriate municipal office.
